Why you need to sign up to post on the forum and comment on the site.

When I first started this site I wanted to keep it as open as possible to encourage discussion about reducing TV. Initially, anyone could post to the forum or reply to my news blog.

Unfortunately, some online gamblers started to take advantage of this openness. They started actually playing online poker games through my site. (boo! boo! you parasites!) I have witessed these type of spammers attack a similar site, The TV Turn-off Network. Their forum is currently down, possibly because of this type of attack, although I am not certain. I wish the them the best of luck in dealing with this.

Furthermore, I recently discovered a woman who had signed up, listed her interests as "long, slow nights" and posted a rather revealing picture (herself?). She was also attempting to search through the member lists and to contact others. I believe I caught her and banned her before she could do any damage. (sorry, rarmasu, you will have to ply your wares somewhere else--NOT on my site!)

Alas, this is the difficulty with a totally open discussion forum. I wish I did not have to take these steps. However, requiring people to register was a necessary step in order to make this a safe place to discuss issues with TV. As I am human, I cannot totally block all trolling attempts, however, I will do my best. I request other users to please alert me to any trolls.

I will not ban users without cause, but I will not tolerate users plying sex and gambling on my site. There are plenty of other sites available for that.

Thank You,
Katherine
