In Russia the state has been tightening control over media ever since president Putin came to power. National television was by far the most important target, but rather than harassing journalists and editors, the Kremlin opted for controlling the owners - a method that has proved to be fairly effective in furthering the Kremlin needs.

Comments: The medium of TV is ideal for centralized control. With only a few initial sources for information, it is easy for either a government or a ambitious businessman to control the content which most people view every day (4 hours 35 minutes on average in the US). With the media in the US currently reduced to only five major owners, it would be ridiculously easy for a wannabe dictator to take control of the TV media in the US.
TV is just not healthy for democracy in general.
